I suggest doing the virtual icebreaker within the meeting time (same as in face to face class). If it is worth doing, it's worth allocating time to do it. The nature of ice breakers depends a lot on the nature of group and the event. In formal virtual education or training, I would just ask the participants to introduce themselves and say what they want to get out of the event.
